Sicily is the biggest island in the Mediterranean, separated from the Italian
peninsula by the strait of Messina, and we have many villas here for your perusal. Sicily is known for its warm climate
even in winter, for its wonderful coastal scenery, for the abundance and
completeness of its archaeological remains, for its volcano, for citrus
fruits, for wine and superb mediterranean cooking. Mount Etna, at
the center of a volcanic area of Sicily, is the highest active volcano
in Europe. Popular seaside resorts in Sicily include Cefalú (near
Palermo), Mondello, Acitrezza, Acireale, Taormina (see below) and Tindari.
There are extensive sandy beaches on the southern coast. Sicily was a Greek
colony during the Classic Age, and the Hellenic heritage is remarkable (Syracuse,
Gela, Agrigento, Selinunte and Eraclea). Important Roman remains can be
seen at Taormina, Syracuse, Tindari, Solunto, Eloro and Patti. The food
prepared in Sicily is undoubtedly a cuisine influenced by the sun and the sea. The never-ending blue skies
and slightly darker Mediterranean waters dominate any visitor's memories
of the island and contribute today, as for centuries, to the brilliance of
the cuisine. Sicilian cooking is unique in Italy, blending extravagant Arab
and northern techniques with simple peasant ingredients, mainly the catch of the day from
the sea and the pick of the vegetable garden. All of our villas in Sicily have good restaurants within easy reach.
